Darren DoyeBiographical Details: Darren Doye grew up in the Bendigo area and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Painting at Ballarat University (1992 – 95). He has been practicing professionally since then exhibiting in a number of solo and group exhibitions, and has artwork in numerous private collections in Australia, Britain and Ireland. Recently he won the ‘He who belongs’ art prize at the Walker Street Gallery in 2006. He was accepted as a finalist in the Signature of M art prize in 2008, and the Agendo art prize in 2009. He was the winner of the Canterbury Art small works prize in 2009, and also awarded the best artwork at Art Red Hill in 2009. Darren has a keen interest in the Australian landscape and way of life. His recent work has focused on the rivalry and irony between urban and rural Australia. Through the use of iconic architectural references Darren's work evokes questions relating to what it means to be a Melbournian? How the city relates to the country and vice versa? Through placing the urban landmarks within idealized rural landscapes,Darren alludes to the impact of the continuing urban sprawl of new housing estates on the rural urban fringes of Melbourne. The layout of the paintings in the form of a wall combined with the woodcut printing technique encourages the viewer to read and personalise the narrative, a little like a comic strip to evoke feelings of nostalgia.
