Janis Runting

I grew up in Melbourne and have always been interested in art. At age 11 I won a local library art competition and through my school years dabbled with paints and drawing. I went on to study Computer Science and then some years later Interior Design which re-introduced me to my passion for colour and pattern.

Since 2004 I have painted seriously and have successfully exhibited at shows around Melbourne. I travel regularly and always take my sketchbook with me. Recently I have returned from the southern Flinders Ranges and I always use these trips to discover interesting terrains and vistas for my paintings.

My work is mainly landscaped based and I try to invest my paintings with strong colour combinations and a sense of movement. I have always loved the outdoors and have camped and bushwalked since my early 20’s. I have developed a love of our natural world and am particularly interested in land forms, shapes and lines. More often these days, I try to paint outside and have found that sketching and painting outdoors gives my work a freshness and spontaneity.

My contemporary paintings are usually oil on board which I have prepared myself, although sometimes I use acrylics. Over the years I have studied with some well-known artists both in Melbourne and overseas. I have been influenced by many painters such as Fred Williams, Margaret Woodward, Luke Scibberas and The Group of Seven. I have several works in private collections.
