Jen is an experienced Artist working in Melbourne and has been painting for over 15 years. She paints in a semi-abstract style using vivid oils on unframed canvas.

Jen has a strong connection to the Australian landscape having a great love of observing nature. “I like to experience the landscape, touch the foliage and breathe in the air then let the images, textural qualities and colours develop in my mind”. She then translates this onto the canvas with enhanced richness and seductive brushwork. Her paintings are not a literal representation but more a feeling of the landscape to immerse the viewer.

Sometimes Jen’s images are percolating in her mind for years and years like her interacting human figures. These often show distortions of scale with elongated limbs and torsos painted into swirling vibrant backgrounds.

Jens scientific background led her to study subjects at close range. Her poppy flower series shows the feather weight petals dancing in the wild lush green fields. Most recently her focus has been on the urban landscape. “I wanted to capture the beauty of rust and moss on aging surfaces along with their bold angular structures”.

Intuition guides Jen’s hand when painting. She describes it as entering into an enclosed and very focussed personal space whereby the canvas grows into its own artwork. “Capturing an image or the stark beauty of a place is not possible through imitation but through intuitive interpretation and for Jen to become lost in the process of painting.

Jen’s work has been displayed and sold at local Melbourne exhibitions and galleries and is currently on display at SOMA Health & Wellness Centre in 144 Barkers Rd, Hawthorn.
