About Marco Luccio

The works presented by Luccio in this exhibition focus on the city’s built environment, which intrigues and inspires him with its complexity and variety.

“The buildings we have represent the type of society we live in. They are the proof of life and how we live it, and to me they signal and suggest the city’s inhabitants,” Luccio says.

Luccio uses images of buildings such as those on the Queen Victoria building site and the State Library, as well as obscure parts of the city. He creates works on paper that explore the various relationships of the built environment with those who build, visit, live in, tear down or merely pass through it. This theme of the infinite stories encased and hidden in a city’s structure is executed in bold black and white prints and mixed media such as charcoal, pastel and paint.

A signature of Luccio’s drawing style is his vigorous, swift lines that give motion, expression and life to buildings that in the physical reality stand monumental and silent in their precise geometric form. The result is a series of deep and rich, light and dark images produced in a way he describes as “instinctive”.

“I like to create an ambiguous and dream-like appearance in my work. With edges of buildings often blurred, there is a feeling of ambiguity about where a structure begins and ends and about its relationship to other structures. We use buildings to define spaces and their function, but in reality, everything interconnects, and that’s what I express in my work,” Luccio says.
