About Matthew Hooper

Since his 2002 (October) exhibition, 'The Mythological Body', at Dickerson Gallery, Matt Hooper's paintings have become increasingly abstract. Following the Mythological Body in 2002, Hooper’s 2004 exhibition of major works at Dickerson Gallery made an emphasis of this move toward abstraction. On the one hand, this has been a natural evolution in his work but it also represents a major shift in Hooper's artistic focus and direction.

Having changed galleries in early 2005 to Thierry B. Gallery (531 High Street, Prahran – 9525 0071), Hooper has taken on a new direction in his art work that will lead to participation in the Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane Affordable Art Fairs of 2005. Hooper will also mount a solo exhibition of paintings at Thierry B. Gallery in November, 2005.

Working on large scale pieces Hooper continues to explore a method of working that is founded on intuitive improvisation, coupled with a subtle use of glazes and a preoccupation with compositional balance.
