About Norm Hanson

I am firstly a geologist, with 40 years world wide experience. I graduated and also lectured part time in geology at RMIT University. However I have always been keen on art & photography. My grandmother was an artist, Nora Hanson, and I remember fondly being able to use her good paints and pastels. When I was a teenager my father and I build a series of neat darkrooms, first in the laundry then under the house. When I studied Geology at RMIT, I was fortunate to do Technical Photography as an optional subject. That is when I bought my first SLR (the early Pentax with the clunky mirror sound) and it was a love affair. My current favorite camera is another Pentax 20D, which still has the same sound and feel. I was a keen member and eventually president of the Camera Club in Rosebery Tasmania. When I was based Perth for some years I did adult education classes in Art through Fremantle Tech. Back in Melbourne I fell in love with digital photography anew, after entering an internet competitions with some of my RMIT students, we won a nice cash price and used some of that to buy a simple yet expensive Sony digital camera (the one that used floppy discs) for students to use on excursions. Once it was in my hands, bingo, I was soon back photographing daily. I am an active blogger (Wandering in The Light) on things they didn’t tell you about digital photography. I am the moderator for the VIC/TAS thread of the Australian Photographers on Flickr. I am a member of the Victorian Artist Society and active in the VACS (Venus Artist Contemporary Showcase) and other Venus Bay art groups. I have had solo exhibitions at Meeniyan Art Gallery, Geck Studio Gallery, Fish Creek and The Monash Gallery of Art and participated in a number of Melbourne and South Gippsland Art shows. My works have also been included in on-line shows in London & New York.

I work in a broad range of medium including paintings, mainly in watercolours & acrylic, photography, collages & mosaics and rock art.
