Fat MummasThe idea behind Fat Mumma’s was formulated in 2005. Kathy Jenkins had an idea for some baby bibs and Tracy was doodling some kids t-shirt designs. Since then it has grown in to something we both feel really excited about and hope we can encourage lots of other parents to join our community of crafty, creative types, who like to wear nice things. The brand is all about creativity and caring. The FM logo is inspired by the cartoon styles of Osamu Tezuka and through the Fat Mumma persona we’ve tried to challenge the gender stereotypes of motherhood and encapsulate the masculine and feminine of parenting. Many of our products are made with both male and female parenting needs in mind; a nappy bag that converts from a back-pack to an over-the-shoulder bag, or a bag that can be reversed to hide a pink floral pattern with a more neutral black vinyl. Our products begin with a sketched out pattern on the back of a paper napkin and manage to work themselves up to a prototyping stage. The great thing about selling directly to our customers is we can fix anything that’s not working, and redesign as needed. This is one of the great advantages of buying hand-made - you are dealing directly with the manufacturer. It also gives us the opportunity to listen to our customer needs. We want our customers to feel they’re part of a unique growing community of parents with an eye for great design and that they have some say in the design process. Customer ideas really matter! One day we hope to be big enough to fund projects in developing nations and a social justice campaign for Women subjected to abuse, while bringing up healthy, happy, confident kids! We’re thinking big in a small hand-made world!!!
