Puka Puka Mobiles

In Japanese puka puka means "an object gently floating in space"…..

Sydney based designer Nina Still has created a unique hand-made range of mobiles under the Puka-Puka label.

Puka-Puka mobiles are contemporary works of art that reflect shapes, colours and landscapes.

Nina creates her original pieces using non-toxic high-quality polypropylene (recyclable plastic) and stainless steel wire. She handcrafts each artwork, balancing the forms and colours to ensure every mobile is one of a kind.

Nina, who has trained as an architect and jeweller, says mobiles are a perfect fusion of her two disciplines. She began Puka-Puka in 2007 after looking for kinetic works of art for her home but finding nothing to suit.

Nina describes her mobile range as “ meditative artwork that creates shadows, moves and sings in the space.” The mobile becomes more of a moving sculpture than mere decorative object.

“The play of light, shadow and colour in the mobiles will enliven any room” she says.

The Australian landscape, in particular the underwater landscape, is the inspiration for many of Nina’s designs.
