Victoria Mason

Victoria Mason started making jewellery in her first year out of high school and hasn’t ever stopped. She studied jewellery design at university, then trade school, worked at the bench for a few different jewellers then started in her own business about 6 years ago.

“It’s actually all I’ve ever wanted to do so I think I’m pretty lucky that I get to design and make exactly what I like every day.”

Victoria returned to Melbourne in 2002 to start her own jewellery studio, where she’s been working for the past 4 years.

“The area of Melbourne that I work from is rich with creative people so it’s a great environment. I most often make jewellery in silver although I also work in gold. I love that silver has a beautiful soft colour that looks great when it is newly polished or worn and scuffed. My jewellery is not particularly flashy. The pieces can seem quite understated because you’ve seen the cup, chair etc. a thousand times, only now it’s made of silver. The fact that they are so familiar is what I think makes them beautiful too. How could you not love a pencil sharpening, or a spoon, or marvel at a peg’s design? When I buy things, I get the most pleasure from those items that have a bit of character, perhaps handmade or limited run (like 3rd Draw Down tea towels) I like to think that other people look for that too and perhaps they see something in my work that tells them it’s been handmade by someone who likes ordinary things like they do.”
