About Alan Constable

Alan was born in 1956 in Melbourne and has worked successfully as an artist for over 10 years under the sponsorship of Arts Project which is a body set up to promote the work of people with disabilites. Alan, while legally blind, is nevertheless able to see and paint in a striking semi-abstract manner. He has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions, both in Australia and overseas, with an increasing amount of success.

The fundamental elements of Alan's painting are colour and texture. Layers of pastel are built up to develop rich marblelike surfaces of variegated colour. Over the past two years Alan's work has become increasingly focused on landscapes and animal images which he painstakingly selects from magazines and books. He then carefully examines the image and sets about interpreting it in a visually analytical way, yet still retains an original and highly individual quality in his work.
