About Jen Shewring
JenShewring – Artist Statement 2019
Jen is an artist living and working in Melbourne painting contemporary semiabstract art. "My work is to make something beautiful". Jen has anabsolute obsession with paint, she focuses in on its buttery texture andvibrant colours to produce stunning on trend paintings. She uses colour andbrightness to stimulate and engage the viewer so they look closer and have funwith the art. She defines her art as spontaneous but intentional, starting apainting with uninhibited broad brushstrokes and moving in towards detail thenadding splashes of contrasting colours to give her paintings thateye-catching sparkle. Each work is a series of layers until the finalimage is built up to bring dimension to the surface along with imagery tonarrate the viewer through the painting. Jen's work is fresh, alive and allowsyou to continually discover new aspects in each piece of art.
Creating new paintings is part of Jen’s everyday life as a full time Artist.“Colour to me is everything. What excites me is creating works that capture aluminous mix of rich intense colours and texture.”
Her work currently focuses on the depiction of nature in the layering ofabstract forms. Themes explore the freedom of birds, the beauty of flowers, relations between people around her and the moods of the landscape. Herpaintings are often not a literal representation; images evolve fromreinterpretation of nature, memories and imagination. “For me, it is importantthat my art should bring pleasure to the viewer. I have a pure love of paint andstrive to create works that capture vivid beauty using the language of colour. This is an idea that I will pursue for a lifetime".
The Impressionist painters and Modern Abstract artists have had a lastinginfluence on Jen's work as she strives to use light and colour to capture thefeeling of a moment. As the great Impressionist artist Cezanne said "Awork of art which did not begin in emotion is not art". Jen feelsextremely fortunate to be able to create and express herself, "it is agift of escapism that I will never take for granted".
After completing an Honours Degree at Monash University in Melbourne, Jen spenttime travelling Europe, Indonesia and Australia. She continues to study andpaint alongside other well known local Artists and friends, always sharingtechniques and ideas. She predominantly paints using oils, acrylics and mixedmedia.
