About Alastair Mackey
I am a graduate of Fine Art at RMIT, majoring in Gold and Silversmithing, under the tutelage of Robert Baines.
My work is about the joy of the mystery of creation and the birth of consciousness. The answers aren't important. What I find profound is that people began to look up and ponder. A conscious mind reflecting back at the cosmos. It is our nature to question and explore. I celebrate this explorative essence; the materials I use are representative of this inventive spirit. Metallurgy represents some of our earliest technological and creative achievements.
Working with Gold, Silver and Bronze I feel tied to this ancient intellect. The longevity inherent to these prime materials generates a relationship with time. A link to the past. Enduring yet impressionable, there is a conduit from the present to the past (and future), especially poignant to items of adornment and ritual, given the intimate nature of such.
