About Gerda van Hamond
Dutch born Gerda van Hamond has an Honours Degree in Fine Art (Painting) from Deakin University as well as a Certificate in Applied Art (Tapestry) from the South West College of TAFE, Warrnambool.
Gerda has exhibited her work extensively throughout Australia as well as Chicago, USA. Her paintings and tapestries are in public, corporate and private collections in most states of Australia, Singapore, Japan and the USA.
The works are very much influenced by the landscape of various parts of Victoria. They try to capture the essence or mood of a location rather than the pictorial aspects and often zoom in on the macro. Something seemingly unimportant suddenly catches the eye and seems to be an embodiment of the entire area.
The series focused on distances from Melbourne are the most recent works, exhibited in Melbourne in August 2003. Several of these paintings were sold to Conrad Jupiters Casino on the Gold Coast to hang in their newly renovated executive floors.
The attempt to give expression to this sense of place is continuing, although the current works focus on areas around Melbourne’s parklands.
