About Julia Johnstone

Julia Johnstone exhibits regularly in Rotary and other public exhibitons and has held a number of successful solo and group exhibitions. She has won a number of awards for her paintings including Popular Choice Award, Ringwood Artists Society; the Pastel Society of Victoria (PSV) 2001 Deans Art Award, second place and PSV 2000 Eckersley Award Best Painting, first place.

Julia appreciates the variety of approaches to art including contemporary styles, impressionist and representational. She prefers to paint in the realistic style and her favourite medium is pastel.

Julia grew up in rural South Gippsland, Victoria and has enjoyed painting and drawing for as long as she can remember. Perhaps her background explains why every topic challenges her - landscape, seascape, portraiture, a favourite pet, figure studies, still life and floral. She considers herself a pastelist although she loves to paint in oil and acrylic as well.

The topics Julia chooses have appeal to her and she tries to capture the feel and mood of the subject...to her this is the essence of good painting, that is the ability to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. Julia has travelled throughout Australia, New Zealand, Italy, France, USA and Mexico always with camera ready. She is passionate about doing photography for her reference collection and to see and experience these places first hand.
