About Linda Robertson

These works are from observational drawings of light on the human body. My interest in drawing the figure has been influenced by the work of Daumier, Degas and the Australian artist Godwin Bradbeer.

I work with models who are also dancers, musicians or other kinds of performers. I use illumination and shadow in a way that reflects the theatrical and emotional nature of their work; this interests me more than drawing the human figure simply as anatomy. A life model exerts a great deal of energy and effort in holding a motionless position in space; my work is a response to the energy and life contained within this stillness.

These images have been worked in graphite on polymer (synthetic) paper covered with a layer of oil paint. This method replicates the monotype process of rubbing through paint onto a smooth plate, but I let the image dry on this surface, instead of transferring it to paper through a printing press.

This way of working combines elements of painting and printmaking, whilst still allowing me the spontaneity of the drawing process
