About Maria Coyle
Maria Coyle has been working as a sculpture since 1985 and has work in private collections in the USA, UK, Europe, Asia and all states of Australia. Her sculptures are primarily influenced by the human body - it's movements and beautiful contours; together with the emotional responses between people. She likes to contrast soft curves with sharp angular planes; movement, grace and a natural flow is important. The great twentieth century sculptor, Henry Moore, is a constant inspiration and has had a profound and obvious effect on Maria's work.
Maria's ceramic sculptures are handbuilt hollow constructions using the 'coil' and 'slab' method. After the initial firing to 1000 degrees celcius, they are sprayed/sponged/brushed with oxides and glazes and refired to 1150 degrees celcius. Sizes vary from small to lifesize and all are suitable for interior or garden display.
In 2000 Maria received the Pat Emery Award for VGA Ceramics. She has undertaken several public commissions including Rendezvous Allegra Hotel, Adelaide (2002), Penbank Independent School, Red Hill (1999) and Mt Lilydale College, Lilydale (1994).
