About Martin Lang

Martin Lang was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1968 before immigrating to Melbourne at the age of 2.

From an early age he was inspired by the visual image and had his first painting lessons at the age of 11 with Max Casey (school of Max Meldrum), taking time off school to attend.

From 1993 to 1996 Martin owned and ran his own airbrushing shop doing commissions and teaching beginners and advanced airbrushing.

Leaving the ‘slickness’ of the airbrush for the texture and effects only achievable with a brush, Martin once again studied tonal painting with Max Casey in 1997.

Martin’s artistic direction was finally set when in 2003 he discovered surrealist James Gleeson and found immediate inspiration. Since that day, he has pursued a path of ‘semi-surrealism’ as he likes to keep ‘just one foot on the ground’.

Martin’s paintings exhibit a sense of realism combined with a surrealist impact. By keeping the recognisable elements in the paintings, he allows the viewer to place themselves in a familiar location but then lose themselves in exploring the unfamiliar detail.

“I paint using the ‘indirect’ painting method. I find the acrylic washes combined with deliberate brush strokes gives a random detail to the paintings that change the image depending on the proximity of the viewer."
