About Ona Henderson

Ona Henderson studied art at Swinburne University in the late sixties. She has been a full-time fine artist for the last twenty years. Ona works from a twenty square studio in The Bend of Islands, Kangaroo Ground.

Ona's creative interpretations often have a dreamtime feel. Aspects of nature become metaphors for the human spirit where she uses symbols and totems to layer meaning in her painting and printmaking. Eighty percent of her inspiration comes directly from her dreams.

Ona has held twenty major exhibitions and been involved in thirty-three feature exhibitions. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including:

  • Best Exhibit, Wildlife Art Society of Australia 1989, 1996, 1999
  • Best Watercolour WASA 1995
  • Best Mixed Media WASA 2000, 2002

Ona is represented in 14 public collections in Australia and overseas including Nillumbik Art, Healesville Sanctuary, Myer Melbourne and Aachen Art Museum, Germany.

Her most recent exhibition is part of a Travelling Group Show along the East Coast of U.S.A culminating in New York City in May 2004.

Ona has been short-listed for the inaugural Cromwell's Art Prize 2004.
