About Patrick Christie

‘Through my work I strive to invoke reflection on the aesthetics of overindulgence, opulence and decadence in our natural world… even in decaying life and creepy-crawly insects, beauty can be found’ Patrick Christie

At the tender age of 10, Patrick Christie dipped a nibbed pen into an inkwell for the very first time. He spent his following three decades refining and perfecting his now instantly recognisable style - keeping the centuries old tradition of ink on paper alive and adding thinly veiled quirks and humour to give his work a contemporary twist.

His dedication to precision and exquisite detail is astonishing. Remarkably all drawn without copying from an arrangement, the artwork flows through the pen onto the paper directly from Christie’s imagination. ‘Once I get into “flow” I loose all sense of time and my surroundings. It’s like an external force has control of my hand’ says Christie.

'Drawing has always been an important part of my being. It feels as natural to me as breathing', reflects Christie. 'I never saw it as anything extraordinary. It’s just something I do. It wasn’t until I was in my 30’s and working as a specialist horse trainer and had a serious fall from a horse when I made the decision to make a career out of my art. I broke fingers on both my hands, with one of the bones almost shattering on the hand I draw with. When the doctor suggested to just patch me up, he assumed I didn't use my hands for any particular skill. I replied, 'I do actually.' That's when I knew I had to take my art seriously—before it was taken away from me. I found the best hand surgeon available and a long rehabilitation process began'.

Patrick Christie’s work is gaining popularity with discerning and visionary collectors. Notably, his Australian native print series was picked up by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) as a welcome or parting gift from our travelling ambassadors and ministers.
